      1. Um, like how long? I can make my camera take a multiple minute exposure with an MC-36a. So what exactly is this camera doing?

          1. The camera is mounted at prime focus on a telescope. The scope needs a decent equatorial mount and guide scope or off-axis guider (to lock onto a star) to keep tracking precise. A PC is usually a prerequisite to run the software that controls the mount, guider, observatory application (TheSkyX, etc).

These images are probably stacks of several 5+ min subexposures combined with dark/flat/bias frames taken at a dark site (way outside the city) and heavily post processed.

I could be way off but my guess is the complete rig, including the D810A is around $7-10k USD.

It’s great to see Nikon throwing their hat into this niche pursuit. The Canon 60Da is the only out of the box astrophotography oriented camera that I am aware of (since the 20Da).

AP is not for the faint of heart, or wallet.

      2. Also, without some sort of tracking mount, long exposures past about 30 seconds will create star trails. So, it would seem that there is more than just a camera involved in taking these photos.
